In this paper we present a new implementation of fast failure detection mechanism BFD in discrete event simulator OMNeT++. One of common fast failure detection technique used in the FRR area is Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) mechanism.

The key factor of network recovery time after link or node failure is failure detection. The FRR mechanisms calculate alternative backup path before the failure in the network may occur. FRR is a technology, that minimizes network repair time after a link or node failure, mainly in the ISP networks. For these reasons, Fast ReRoute (FRR) has been developed. During this process, the data affected by specific failure is permanently lost. This process may take from a few hundred ms to tens of seconds. LFID thus protects against a higher percentage of single and multiple failures (or congestions) and comes close to the performance of arbitrary source routing.Ībstract -When a routing protocol detects a link or node failure, a network convergence process starts in the network. Our solution LFID (Loop-Free Inport-Dependent) routing, though having a slightly higher time complexity, leads to both a higher number of and shorter potential paths than related work. We show that a DAG's nexthop options are necessarily limited, and that, by using certain links in both directions (per destination), we can add further nexthops while still avoiding loops. Most related work chooses the viable nexthops by applying the 'Downward Criterion', i.e., only adding nexthops that lead closer to the destination or more generally by creating a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) for each destination. In this paper, we investigate the requirements and trade-offs for making this choice.

Before deciding how to split traffic, one first needs to decide which nexthops to allow at each step. The Internet can be made more efficient and robust with hop-by-hop multipath routing: Each router on the path can split packets between multiple nexthops in order to 1) avoid failed links and 2) reduce traffic on congested links. This unique behavior can be applied in the IoT sensors area, especially in network architecture that guarantees reliability of data transfer. The enhanced M-REP FRR mechanism can find an alternative path in the event of multiple links or nodes failing at different times and places in the network. The categories of proposed solutions for these problems are known as Fast ReRoute (FRR) mechanisms. This process may take an unpredictable time, mostly depending on the size and the structure of the affected network segment and the routing protocol used within the network. After a node or link failure within the network, the process of network convergence will begin. One of these requirements is the minimal packet loss in the network. Modern Internet Protocol (IP) networks demand specific qualitative and quantitative parameters that need to be met. The sprawling nature of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors require the comprehensive management and reliability of the entire network.
